Why Choose Health Communication?

Study health communication at Wright State and contribute to health promotion in patient-family communication, health message and campaigns, health in mass media, public health, and technology and health. You will work your way through a curriculum of theory, research, and application that addresses health issues across the spectrum of interpersonal, cultural, organizational, public relations, and mass-mediated contexts. Add this minor to your current major; a wide variety of majors may seek careers within health fields.

  • You will learn theories, research, and practices of health communication.
  • You will learn and apply strategies that can develop and improve communication among colleagues, peers, patients, and family members/caregivers in diverse contexts of healthcare.
  • You will understand the origins, development, and varied nature of health communication as it relates to interpersonal, familial, community, and public perspectives.
  • You will examine a variety of factors that influence health, including technology, culture, education, and public policy.

The ability to clearly and effectively communicate is an asset for any career field. This program emphasizes communication through various channels including interpersonal, organizational, and even social media.

Real-World Experience

Past students have interned at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, the Dayton Dragons, the Ohio Attorney General’s Office, Cox Media, Central Intelligence Agency, religious organizations, and hospitals.

Admission

Admission requirements are designed to be consistent with existing department requirements. These requirements are as follows:

  • Students must be an undergraduate and have sophomore status.
  • Students must have completed 45 hours of coursework.
  • Students must have a minimum GPA of 2.25.
