Crime and Justice Studies

If you are a Crime and Justice Studies (CJS) student who maintain a high standard of excellence throughout your coursework and wants to extend your knowledge of the field, apply to the CJS honors program to graduate with honors. 

Admission into CJS Honors

You must maintain a 3.0-grade point average overall and a 3.5 average within the Crime and Justice Studies major. It is recommended that you enter the program during your junior year. The application (PDF), detailing an honors project and faculty advisor, should be submitted directly to the CJS director for approval. 

Completion of the CJS Honors

You can earn departmental honors by completing the following requirements: 

  1. Complete all requirements for the Bachelor of Arts in Crime and Justice Studies.
  2. Maintain a 3.0-grade point average overall and a 3.5 average within the Crime and Justice Studies major. 
  3. Complete honors coursework and project earning a B or better and present the final project to the CJS Honors Committee for final defense and approval.

Geography

The Geography Honors Program provides an opportunity for students to achieve their highest possible level of intellectual attainment. Geography majors of superior academic ability are invited to apply.

Admission into the Program

Geography majors may enter the Honors program after meeting with their geography advisor and having a cumulative Wright State grade point average of 3.5 or better in all coursework. It is strongly recommended that students enter the Honors program during their junior year or after completing 60 semester credit hours.

Completion of the Geography Honors Program

A student completes the geography Honors program when they have met the requirements listed below.

  1. Completed all requirements for the geography degree.
  2. Maintained a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 for all coursework completed at Wright State.
  3. Completed GEO 4990 Applied Research Project with a grade of A.
  4. Completed an honors project for GEO 4990 Applied Research Project.

International Studies Departmental Honors Program

The Honors program in international studies enables superior and highly motivated students to engage in an in-depth study of international studies topics of interest to them and to develop their scholarly abilities in this interdisciplinary field of study.

To enter the honors program in international studies,you must be an international studies major, have attained senior standing, have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 overall and 3.5 in the major, and have applied to the director of the international studies program for admission no later than the beginning of your senior year.

As a candidate for honors in international studies, you must also complete an honors research paper. This 20-25 page paper may be written as part of an independent study or for an advanced, limited enrollment seminar in any discipline in which you have had significant coursework. You must earn an A or B in the course and on the paper. If you fail to meet this grading requirement, you will not graduate with honors in international studies, but you may still count the departmental honors course toward your international studies major if the course is completed with a minimum grade of C.

Modern Languages

The Honors Program of the Department of Modern Languages provides students of superior academic ability the opportunity to use, broaden, and demonstrate the knowledge and skills they have acquired; their work must show a keener perception, a greater depth, and a higher degree of originality than is expected in non-honors projects. Candidates for honors in the Department of Modern Languages must be majors in the department. At the time of application for admittance to the program, students must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 in their major. Learn more about Departmental Honors requirements.

Political Science

Political science majors may earn departmental honors by completing the following requirements:

  1. Compiling a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on all political science course work and a 3.0 cumulative GPA.
  2. Attaining senior standing.
  3. Completing an honors project (20 page minimum) associated with a 4000-level course in political science with a grade of A or B.

By completing these requirements and by qualifying to participate in the university honors program, majors may earn the designation "University Honors Scholar" upon graduation. Interested students should see the director of the University Honors program for more information.

Honors Graduation Application

Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies

The Honors program in women, gender, and sexuality studies (WGS) enables superior and highly motivated undergraduate students to engage in an in-depth study of WGS related topics of interest to them and to develop their scholarly abilities in this interdisciplinary field of study.

To pursue honors in women, gender, and sexuality studies, a student must be a WGS major, a junior or senior with at least 30 credit hours completed towards the WGS major, have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 overall and 3.5 in the major, and apply to the program director for the honors thesis no later than the beginning of their senior year.

The application for honors in WGS must include a brief 1-2 page summary of the proposed honors research paper identifying the general topic and its contexts or significance, the proposed methodology, and a thesis statement. It is recommended that the application identify the name of a potential academic advisor for the research paper, ideally a faculty member whose area of expertise matches the research paper topic and with whom the student has previously worked or taken classes.
