Study from a social scientific perspective how humans create, transmit, receive, and respond to messages. The communication studies program will help you better understand intrapersonal and interpersonal communication. The mass communication program shapens your skills in mediated processes and effects, social media, digital media, and other multimedia processes. Your intellectual, organizational, and social abilities will increase through our new curriculum. These abilities can be applied to a variety of contexts, including interpersonal, organizational, and mediated settings. Your courses will underscore real-world experiences with theoretical frameworks. Your ability to critically think about the world around you cannot be overemphasized. Real-World Experience

Internships can be completed for COM 4330 after administrative approval. You must turn in a job description, the credentials of the supervisor, and an explanation of how you applied concepts learned in your classes to the real-world experiences in this internship. Past students have interned at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, the Dayton Dragons, the Ohio Attorney General’s Office, Cox Media, Central Intelligence Agency, religious organizations, and hospitals.

Success Stories

Amanda Harris, a communication studies student who interns in the New Media Incubator, helped beginning French students work on their language skills by producing storytelling videos.
Vicky Lindsey is set to graduate early from Wright State with a degree in communication studies.

Admission

The major in communication is for you if you are interested in personal development or a career in education, industry, government, or the media. Communication majors are expected to achieve basic proficiency in communication skills and to master the essentials of communication theory. All communication majors must take 12 hours of required courses, as well as a minimum of 43 additional hours in communication. All communication majors are encouraged to participate in communication activities outside the university. To be admitted as a major, you must have at least a 2.25 GPA.

Review the college admission requirements and complete the admission application. Identify whether you will be majoring in communication studies.

If you are a current student and wish to change majors, go to the WINGS Express major/minor change request form and change your major.  If you are an undecided/exploratory student, talk to your advisor about majoring in communication studies.
