It’s an exciting time to be in the field of communication! With the explosion of digital media, video and creative ways to tell stories, there is so much to learn and explore and there is a lot that can be done with a communication degree. Here are valuable pointers to help communication students succeed at Wright State University:

  1. Attend scheduled office hours with your professors! Don’t be shy. Get some clarification on class material, ask questions, explore career opportunities or pick your professor’s brain. Also, a few extra brownie points never hurt.
  2. Don’t be afraid to speak up in class. Communication is all about conversations and COM professors love it when students are engaged and participating.
  3. Have an open mind. There are so many different career paths out there for communication students. Chances are you’ll change your mind about what you want to do at least once.
  4. Start a portfolio. As a communication student, you will be responsible for a myriad of projects that require critical thinking. Future employers will be interested in samples of your work, so starting an online portfolio will help you keep track of your academic accomplishments.
  5. Join a communications-related organization. This will give you some extra help enhancing your skills. The Guardian campus newspaper, WWSU 106.9 FM, Student Government and Photography Club are a few great options.
  6. Take advantage of Career Services and networking opportunities. Career Services is a useful tool that can help point you in the right direction when thinking about your post-grad job search. Wright State hosts several career fairs throughout the year and a key to finding employment is networking with professionals in your field of study.
  7. Have a positive attitude about group projects. Communication professionals often work in collaborative team environments, so it’s a good idea to become comfortable in groups. Also, it’s okay to step up and take a leadership role in your group, in fact it’s recommended.
  8. Complete at least one internship. Internships are a great way to gain workplace experience and learn more about your desired profession. They also really spice up your resume!
  9. Build an online presence. Become a pro at using LinkedIn, start using multiple social media channels more proactively, create a unique tagline that relates to your career goals and post content that is relevant to your field. This will help display your drive and passion for your career pursuits.
  10. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. Start a blog, write an e-book, host a YouTube channel or begin a personal project that is important to you and share it with others. Now is the time to exercise your creativity and find your niche as a communication professional.

Follow these tips, and you will be able to maximize your experience as a Wright State communication student.
