School of Fine and Performing Arts

Ensembles

As a major component of a balanced curriculum of music performance, applied music, music history, music theory, and music education, the School of Fine and Performing Arts offers a wide range of performing ensembles.

These ensembles are open to all students at the university, regardless of major, and, in some cases, to community members.

Membership for Music Majors and Minors

Membership in the School of Fine and Performing Arts ensemble program is required of all music majors and minors throughout their course of study, as described in the curriculum outline sheets. Prospective members should consult the appropriate conductor for additional information.

Requirements

Every B.M. Performance major and B.M. Music Education major is required to participate in at least one university ensemble related to the student’s applied music concentration during each semester in which the student is enrolled full-time (with the exception of the student teaching semester for music education students). Every B.M. Music History/Literature major and every B.A. major must participate in at least one university ensemble related to the student’s applied music concentration for the number of credits/semesters stipulated in the Academic Catalog.

Assignment to an ensemble is made by the director of bands, director of choral studies, or director of orchestral studies; the appropriate ensemble director; and the student's full-time applied instructor. When the student's applied instructor is not a full-time faculty member, approval must be given by the chair of the student's applied board. To be eligible for the Bachelor of Music degree, the performance major must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 in the major performing medium and a 2.0 in all other required music courses.
