The School of Humanities and Cultural Studies (SoHCS) allows students to submit a portfolio of written work to seek credit for ENG 3610 through Wright State University’s Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) Policy. The portfolio should include:
- a table of contents.
- at least five examples of technical or workplace writing representing a range of professional writing contexts and genres (e.g., instructions, technical reports, proposals, manuals, web content, process documentation, workplace correspondence, training materials, presentations, or similar documents).
- a cover paragraph for each item in the portfolio identifying its audience, purpose, and context; for materials produced as part of employment or workplace responsibilities, include contact information for a reference who can verify the authenticity of the work; for materials developed using AI-assisted tools, briefly explain the nature and extent of that use.
Portfolios will be evaluated by English faculty to determine whether the writing reflects the learning outcomes for ENG 3610 and shows that the student can:
- explain the role and functions of technical writing in professional and organizational contexts.
- apply rhetorical principles to analyze and produce technical and workplace documents.
- produce writing that addresses the needs of diverse audiences and communicates technical information effectively.
- apply professional practices, tools, and ethical standards in technical writing.
- produce writing that demonstrates clarity, concision, and effectiveness across multiple modes and media.
- apply appropriate style conventions and writing strategies for specific audiences and purposes.
Statement on AI Use
The purpose of the ENG 3610 PLA process is to evaluate the student’s prior learning and professional writing abilities. Portfolio materials may include documents developed with AI-assisted tools when such use reflects established professional practice; however, any use of generative AI must be disclosed in the cover paragraph accompanying the relevant document, and students remain responsible for confirming the accuracy of AI-generated content and adhering to ethical standards. Failure to disclose the use of generative AI or submission of materially inaccurate information will result in denial of PLA credit for ENG 3610.

- Email sohcs@wright.edu to notify the School of your interest in pursuing PLA credit for ENG 3610.
- Complete required payment and PLA paperwork, including any required DocuSign forms.
- Follow instructions provided by SoHCS to prepare and submit your portfolio materials.
