Master of Arts in English Scholarships and Teaching Assistantships

On this page:

Overview

The Master of Arts in English Program is pleased to offer two program-level funding opportunities: Graduate Tuition Scholarships and Graduate Teaching Assistantships.

To be considered for both a Graduate Tuition Scholarship and a Graduate Teaching Assistantship, applicants must complete the following by February 1:

  • submit a completed application for admission
  • arrange to have two letters of recommendation assessing your qualifications for graduate study in English sent directly from your recommenders to Crystal B. Lake, Director of English Graduate Studies, at crystal.lake@wright.edu;
  • submit a 250-500 word personal statement as a Word or PDF file to Crystal B. Lake, Director of English Graduate Studies, at crystal.lake@wright.edu that does two things: 1) describes how your experiences in academic environments, workplaces, and/or community leadership positions have prepared you for graduate-level work in English, 2) states the personal or career goals an M.A. in English will help you achieve.

Your letters of recommendation and your personal statement will be added to the application materials you submit for admission and evaluated by a faculty committee who makes final funding decisions.

Applicants for our Graduate Tuition Scholarship and Graduate Teaching Assistantship opportunities will be informed about whether their application was successful by no later than March 1, and we will ask those selected to receive funding to confirm their intention to enroll for the upcoming Fall semester by the national deadline of April 15.

Graduate Tuition Scholarships

Graduate Tuition Scholarships provide well-qualified students with a tuition discount of up to $1800.00 per semester for up to four semesters of graduate coursework. Students awarded a Graduate Tuition Scholarship must maintain full-time status and a 3.0 GPA to be eligible for renewal after the first semester of their award.

Graduate Teaching Assistantships

Graduate Teaching Assistantships provide exceptionally well-qualified students with a tuition waiver for up to six credit hours per semester plus an annual stipend of $10,000.00 for two years. In exchange, Graduate Teaching Assistants teach three undergraduate courses in their first year of graduate study and four undergraduate courses in their second year of graduate study as the sole instructor of record. All Graduate Teaching Assistants teach courses focused on writing and composition from set syllabi but are responsible for developing daily lesson plans and class activities. Additionally, all Graduate Teaching Assistants must attend one week of full-time summer training two weeks before the start of the Fall semester, take ENG 7200 (which will count toward their degree), perform satisfactorily in their classrooms, and maintain both full-time status as well as a GPA of 3.0 every semester for their funding to continue. Graduate Teaching Assistants may not pursue more than 10 weekly hours of employment outside of the university.

The Graduate Tuition Scholarship and Graduate Teaching Assistantship awards may not be combined and cannot be extended beyond four regular semesters of full-time coursework.

Other Funding Opportunities

Wright State offers additional funding opportunities that are awarded outside of the English Program and require separate applications. Applicants to the Master of Arts degree in English should file a FAFSA and apply for additional scholarship opportunities offered by Wright State University. Applicants to the Master of Arts degree in English should also consider applying for scholarships offered through Wright State’s College of Graduate Programs and Honors Studies. International applicants should consult the funding opportunities available through the Wright State’s Center for International Education.
