Writing Flash Fiction Workshop

February 9, 2014; 2:00-3:30 p.m
Books & Co. at The Greene
Scott Geisel
, published short story writer and professor of English at Wright State University, Scott Geisel, will lead a workshop on Writing Flash Fiction at Books & Co. at The Greene in Beavercreek, Ohio; 2:00-3:30 pm. A story well-told in 500 words or so—or LESS—is an accomplishment for the writer and a treat for readers. This sub-genre of story writing is also growing more and more in popularity and provides plenty of opportunities for submitting to journals. At this seminar, inspired authors will learn the tips and techniques of writing super-short fiction . . . in a flash!

Geisel will speak about what defines flash fiction, elements that are different from a short story or novel, and some history of the genre. The workshop will include examples, exercises, writing prompts, and resources for those seeking publication. There will be a question and answer period at the end.

Geisel’s most recent publications include

  • Best of Ohio Short Stories (2013)
  • Christmas Stories from Ohio – Includes well-known Ohio writers, among them: Paul Laurence Dunbar, Nikki Giovanni, Langston Hughes, and James Thurber. My story also aired on WYSO as an audio recording
  • Best New Writing 2008
  • Geisel has a collection available on Amazon (Cinderbox Road and Other Stories). More than half of the stories were previously published or award-winners.
