Minor in Philosophy

Why Choose Philosophy?

All disciplines require clear, critical, rigorous thinking and that makes a minor in philosophy the perfect complement to any major, whichever discipline it may be in. Our minor program is designed to provide you with the essential skills and training you need to be successful in most any field. And if the minor whets your appetite for more, consider a double major!

Academics and Curriculum

Area Requirements: Philosophy minors must take three area courses, with at least one course from each area:

  • History of Philosophy: This area covers the western philosophical tradition, including ancient, medieval, and modern thought.
  • Value Theory: This area covers ethical theory, applied ethics, bioethics, history of ethics, and metaphysical issues such as free will, responsibility, and personhood.
  • Core Curriculum: This area covers philosophy of science, philosophy of language, philosophy of mind, metaphysics, and epistemology.

Electives: Philosophy minors must take a minimum of four additional philosophy electives. These courses may be chosen from any area. You may concentrate your work in one area or spread it out over several.
