The Department of English Language and Literatures allows students the opportunity to demonstrate proficiency by exam to earn credit for ENG 3000 Business Writing. To demonstrate proficiency for ENG 3000, student must:
- Start the PLA process by submitting the paperwork and payment, please consult the English department staff at [email@example.com] or by calling 937-775-3136 to discuss the sample papers you will provide and the persuasive document you will be required to write
- Submit a portfolio of professional work that demonstrates competency in a minimum of 80% of the learning outcomes for ENG 3000. View the list of learning outcomes.
- Complete a writing examination that explains how the portfolio’s content demonstrates familiarity with and competency in the ENG 3000 Learning Outcomes.
About the Portfolio
The portfolio must consist of a minimum of 5 pieces of standard business documents. Choose three different examples of the following types of business documents (or their equivalent):
- Good News
- Bad News (external)
- Direct Request (external)
- Request Refusal (external)
- Direct Claim
- Bad News (internal)
- Direct Request (internal)
- Request Refusal (internal)
Additionally, the portfolio must include each of the following
- One report (i.e., Feasibility Report; Justification/Recommendation Report; Progress [Interim] Report; Proposal; Yardstick Report, etc.)
- One executive summary
Portfolio Layout and Presentation
The following are guidelines for the portfolio’s layout and presentation:
- The portfolio must include a Table of Contents.
- The portfolio can be in digital or print media.
- Each item in the portfolio must include a cover paragraph that identifies the audience for the work, its purpose, and the context in which the work was produced.
- For digital work, ensure all links to online materials are intact and all files accessible at the time of review, or the work will be discounted.
- For each professionally produced document, provide at least one verifiable reference that confirms the authenticity of the work and the context in which it was produced.
Prior to starting the portfolio submission, the following must be completed:
- Fill out the Prior Learning Assessment Registration Form found here: https://www.wright.edu/admissions/transfer/prior-learning-assessment
- Submit to the English department by sending the form to firstname.lastname@example.org or bringing it to our office in 470 Millett for the chair’s signature
- The chair will review and sign the form and return it to you
- Mail the completed and signed form with check to: Office of the Bursar, 3640 Col. Glenn Hwy., Dayton, OH 45435. If using a credit card email the form to email@example.com or fax to 937-775-5775.
The fee for this Prior Learning Assessment is listed on the Prior Learning Assessment Registration Form (PDF).
Students successfully completing ENG 3000 will:
- Plan, organize, write, and revise standard business documents, including memos, letters, and both short and long reports that demonstrate:
- An understanding of audience analysis for appropriate tone and style, medium, format, and delivery method
- Knowledge of writing conventions to produce coherent documents that show a positive audience orientation and the credibility of the writer
- Work in a team successfully to be able to:
- Work quickly and under pressure with others
- Multi-task, handling multiple deadlines and varying tasks
- Take responsibility for the tasks he/she has agreed upon with team
- Design and present an oral business presentation, as an individual or in a group, using presentation tools
