Wright State's Department of History is one of the largest history departments in Ohio's public university system. Our faculty members specialize in eras from the Middle Ages to the present and in regions throughout the world, including the United States, Europe, Latin America, Asia, and the Middle East. We teach a range of classes on topics including the Renaissance, U.S. women’s history, European warfare, colonial Africa, and imperial Russia. Courses in the history of the classical period are offered through the Department of Religion, Philosophy, and Classics. Advanced undergraduates have the option of working independently with faculty members on an independent study course or a senior honors thesis.
Within the university, we contribute to a variety of programs, including the Wright State Core, the regional studies program, African and African-American studies, social science education, and women’s studies.
We also actively engage a wide range of scholarly pursuits. We write books and articles on topics such as the Revolutionary War, the cultural significance of beards, gender, the intersection of technology and diplomacy, the international drug trade, labor in colonial Kenya, and religion, to name just a few. We also participate in professional associations and conferences. Within our faculty are current and past officers of the Ohio Academy of History, the Midwest Conference on British Studies, and the National Collegiate Honors Council.
