Why Choose Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages Concentration in English?

The Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) concentration in English acquaints students with the basic knowledge and skills necessary to teach English as a second or foreign language. Courses offer a combination of advanced work in applied linguistics with training in current methods of language teaching. Students may take TESOL courses in several different forms. In addition to graduate and undergraduate degree programs on the Wright State campus, students can study and learn abroad. Internships are available in Japan and China, as well as in Southwestern Ohio.

Licensure to Teach Integrated Language Arts Pathway

The TESOL with a pathway to teacher’s license program will allow students to complete all the requirements for the B.A. in English AND the initial teaching licensure within four years with careful course planning. Some of the Wright State Core courses and general elective courses can be used to fulfill prerequisite requirements. TESOL students who wish to pursue this teaching licensure pathway program should speak with their faculty advisors as early as possible, take the necessary prerequisites, and apply to the Department of Teacher Education for the licensure program during their sophomore year. Careers

Graduates of our program are teaching English all over the world, whether for the Peace Corps or in conjunction with international universities or English Language Programs. Domestically, TESOL graduates are teaching English in public schools, two-year and four-year colleges or in intensive English programs, others are administering ESL programs.

Real-World Experience

Students in the TESOL concentration, TESOL certificate programs, TEFL certificate, and Master of Arts program in TESOL must complete a semester-long internship before graduating. Internship supervisors must have a Master of Arts degree in TESOL

Prior to starting review the program of study and plan a semester for a TESOL internship with a TESOL advisor. Some of the courses successfully completed in the TEFL Undergraduate Certificate program may substitute for courses in the TESOL concentration. See your advisor for details.

Admission

Any student eligible for admission to the College of Liberal Arts is eligible for admission to the Creative Writing, Literature, Professional Writing, and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages concentrations in English. Non-native speakers of English seeking admission to any undergraduate major program in English must meet one of the following minimum language proficiency requirements:

  • TOEFL: 79
  • IELTS: 6.5
  • PEARSON PTE: 58, or
  • Students who show proof of successful completion of an Intensive English Program from an accredited Institution or program accepted by international admissions are exempt from the requirement to take an approved English Proficiency exam.

Review the admission requirements and complete the admission application. Identify whether you will be majoring in English.
