Theatre, Dance, and Motion Pictures

W. Stuart McDowell’s dedication to service has been a key component of the growth and increased national stature of the Department of Theatre, Dance, and Motion Pictures and the university. His leadership in the department and talent as a producer have had a profound impact on his students, colleagues, and community. Dr. McDowell has directed multiple memorable productions at Wright State. During the more than two decades in which he served as chair and artistic director, the department nearly doubled in size and became one of the most successful state university performing arts programs in America. The faculty are nationally recognized and alumni have received major awards and national and international acclaim. Among Dr. McDowell’s most recent successes is nurturing his longstanding relationship with actor and producer Tom Hanks, resulting in Hanks becoming national honorary chair for Wright State’s Rise. Shine. campaign and the naming  of the Tom Hanks Center for Motion Pictures. Always an advocate for his program and department, Dr. McDowell frequently finds innovative opportunities to showcase the talents of his students and colleagues and to celebrate the achievements of alumni.
