Grateful Retiree Supports Literature Students at Wright State

Drs. Norman and Cecile Cary were Founding Members of the English Department of Wright State University, teaching there from 1967 to 1999.  The late Norman Reed Cary specialized in American Literature, Religion, and Literature, and the Anglophone literature of the former British Commonwealth.  His publications include the book Christianity and Literature.  Cecile Williamson Cary specialized in Shakespeare’s plays.  In addition to publishing various articles, she co-edited the book Shakespeare and the Arts and co-chaired two conferences for the Ohio Shakespeare Conference.  Cecile Williamson Cary recently established the Norman and Cecile Cary Endowed Scholarship to support English majors with an interest in English, American, or Anglophone Literature.  This gift represents the gratitude of both Carys to Wright State University for the opportunity given them to teach the literature that enriched their lives to students who might also find it enriching.

Michael is a native Daytonian, pursuing his undergraduate degree in Literature with a minor in Women's Studies. He was accepted into the College of Liberal Arts at age 25 as a first-generation college student and quickly discovered his niche in academia. Some of Michael’s favorite subjects are philosophy, aesthetics, and religion. His essays, short stories, and critical works on a range of topics have been regularly published in Telephone Magazine. As a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certificate recipient and a Writing Consultant in the WSU Writing Center, Michael especially enjoys tutoring and working with those who are learning English as a second language.
