Coming Soon: Liberal studies will be called interdisciplinary studies effective Fall 2025. The name will be changed to better reflect the range of knowledge you’ll receive in this dynamic degree track that helps prepare you for real-world experiences and disciplines. The courses will not change—only the name. Register now to secure your spot! If you are a current liberal studies major, please contact Linda Hockaday after the Fall 2025 Semester begins to have your major switched into the new interdisciplinary studies program.
Available in Fall 2025:
Complete a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies or a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies completely online.
- Choose several of your own electives to complete your degree.
- Bachelor of Science track does not require a foreign language course.
- Bachelor of Arts track requires social science courses.
Why Choose Liberal Studies (Interdisciplinary Studies)?
Help design your own degree program—one broad in scope, narrow in concentration, and flexible enough to draw courses from all the departments and programs in the College of Liberal Arts. The interdisciplinary studies degree is ideal if your interests encompass more than one liberal arts field and you desire greater flexibility in your program. If you want to change your major but still graduate in a timely manner, or if you are a transfer student who might benefit from an interdisciplinary curriculum, consider interdisciplinary studies.
Careers
Gain a strong foundation in core areas of critical thinking, writing proficiency, and interpersonal communication by pursuing an interdisciplinary studies major. You will also enroll in one professional component course, such as computer science or business, to enhance your readiness for the workplace. Armed with such skills, you will be well-equipped to adapt to constantly changing economic conditions.
Combining courses in English, communications, and history may prepare you for a career in journalism or other media. Combining fine arts courses with other disciplines may open opportunities in marketing or management for museums and art galleries. A combination of philosophy, political science, and classics would even be an effective pre-law curriculum. Because the range of disciplines available is so broad, your possible career options are almost limitless.

Academics and Curriculum
The interdisciplinary studies major comprises 33 hours of coursework, consisting of core, concentration, and related requirements. You will take 12 hours in the core liberal arts disciplines of fine arts, social sciences, and humanities, with at least one course in each area. You will also select one of these three disciplines as your area of concentration in which to take 15 hours of upper-level courses. In addition, you must take one interdisciplinary studies course and one professional component course chosen in consultation with and approved by the interdisciplinary studies program coordinator.
Three Liberal Arts Areas of Study
- Fine Arts: Art, Art History, Music, Theater Arts
- Social Sciences: Economics, Political Science, Sociology, Anthropology, Urban Affairs, Geography, History (may also be classed with Humanities)
- Humanities: Classical Languages and Cultures, Communication, English, History, Modern Languages, Philosophy, Religion
Interdisciplinary Studies
- Includes courses in African and African American Studies; Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies; International Studies; and other multidisciplinary courses.
Professional Component
- Includes courses in Business; Computer Science; Public Administration; Technical Writing; and other courses providing workplace skills.

Admission
- New students: Review the college admission requirements and complete the admission application. Identify that you will be majoring in interdisciplinary studies.
- Transfer students: Contact the Transfer Center, as well as the liberal studies director, to explore how this major can work for you.
- Current students: If you wish to change majors, submit a Major/Minor Change Request by logging in to WINGS, then select Student Academics under Your Launchpad. If you are an undecided/exploratory student, talk to the liberal studies program coordinator to learn how this major can work for you.
