Why Choose Applied Humanities?
The Applied Humanities undergraduate certificate prepares students to use the insights of the humanities to address today's most pressing challenges. Through an interdisciplinary curriculum, students explore how history, culture, philosophy, literature, religion, politics, and the arts shape the world around us while developing practical skills that employers value, including critical thinking, collaboration, research, and communication.
As the culminating credential of Wright State's Wright Questions program, the certificate connects classroom learning to real-world issues through four themed pathways focused on health, violence, machines, and the environment. Students graduate with the ability to analyze complex problems from multiple perspectives, build thoughtful, evidence-based solutions, and communicate their ideas effectively across a variety of professional and academic settings.
Whether you plan to pursue a career in business, healthcare, public service, education, technology, or graduate study, the Applied Humanities certificate demonstrates your ability to think critically, solve complex problems, and adapt to an increasingly interconnected world.
Academics and Curriculum
The Applied Humanities undergraduate certificate is designed for students who want to deepen their understanding of the human experience while developing practical, transferable skills for today's workforce. The program serves as the final component of the Wright Questions program, a series of multi-semester learning communities and curricular pathways built around Wright State's Core curriculum.
Students complete one of four Wright Questions pathways centered on contemporary challenges:
- Health
- Violence
- Machines
- Environment
Each pathway fulfills five Wright State Core general education requirements while encouraging students to examine complex issues through multiple disciplinary perspectives. To earn the certificate, students complete a Wright Questions sequence along with one additional humanities elective outside of the Core.
