Take the Next Step
Finding the right college means finding the right fit. See all that the College of Liberal Arts has to offer by visiting campus.
Marcella Hackbardt is a visual artist, curator, and educator living in central Ohio. She is a Professor and Chair of studio art at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio. Her current work explores aspects of knowledge, self-reflection, the environment, and symbolic states. She received her M.F.A. in studio art/photography from the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, and a B.A. in studio art from the University of Alaska Anchorage.
In this still-life series titled Momentos, Hackbardt investigates the psychological introspection and tension between cherished physical accumulations and intentional rearrangements and sometimes destruction. The primarily small human and animal figurines and objects are time-worn, sometimes already chipped, and made of delicate materials. The groupings and broken parts emphasize the fragile, changeable, and breakable nature of memory and meaning, connoting loss of beauty, emotional turbulence, and personal struggle.
