Top Religion, Philosophy, and Classics Students Honored

The end of the academic year is a time for awards. Several graduating seniors in the Departments of Religion, Philosophy, and Classics were honored at award ceremonies held at WSU over the last few weeks.

Top Scholar

Timothy B. Corcoran, a Classical Humanities major, was named Top Scholar in the College of Liberal Arts at a ceremony held on April 11 at the Dunbar Library. Excelling in both Latin and Greek courses, Tim wrote his senior paper on the importance of engineering in Roman siege warfare. He has served as President for the Wright State Chapter of Eta Sigma Phi, a national honor fraternity for students of Classical languages, and as president of the Wright State Classics Club.

The Top Scholar award is sponsored by WSU Parents Association and Friends of the Libraries. Each of the six colleges selects a student, in whose honor a book is contributed to the University Libraries’ collections. Tim’s book, titled Herculaneum: Art of a Buried City, is a fitting tribute to an excellent Classics scholar.

Outstanding Students

Three graduating seniors received Outstanding Student awards at a ceremony sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts on April May 2.

Jacquelyn Weaver, a dual major in Religion and Political Science, was named the outstanding Religion student, in recognition of her scholarly accomplishments both at home and abroad. Having studied in France, India, and Thailand, Jacquelyn plans to pursue graduate work in a field that combines her interests in both Asian religions and politics.

Alexander C. Thomas was named the outstanding Philosophy student. Graduating with a minor in Classics, Alex was honored for his quick intellect, his talent for analytical writing, and his dedication to learning. After graduation he plans to take some time off before applying to either graduate school or law school.

In addition to the Top Scholar award, Timothy Corcoran also received the outstanding Classics student award. He plans to spend the next year applying to graduate programs in Classical languages, history, and literature.

Honors Students

The University Honors Program recognizes student achievement with several sorts of awards. Students graduating with honors this spring were recognized at a ceremony held on May 1 in the Student Union. At Photo of Theresia Gordnierthis ceremony the honors medallions, which students wear at graduation, were distributed.

Theresia Gordnier, a Philosophy major, received departmental honors. To obtain this award a student must complete an extended honors research project under the direction of a faculty advisor. Theresia’s project, directed by Dr. Scott Wilson, was titled “Doctoring at a Distance: The Ethical Implications of Telemedicine.” She will be attending the University of Cincinnati School of Medicine in the fall.

Hope Houston, a double major in Philosophy and English, graduated in December 2013 as a General Studies Honors Scholar. Students receiving this award complete at least seven Honors courses and maintain a GPA of at least 3.5.
