Farewell to Layne Crawford

Layne Crawford, long time Modern Languages Administrative Support Coordinator, will be retiring on December 31, 2015.

Layne was born in Houston, Texas, and went to university in Texas, Utah, Hawaii and ultimately here in Dayton.  She was hired by former Chair, David Garrison, on June 28, 2006, a year after she had received her B.A. in Spanish from Wright State.  In 2007, she married Dr. David Orenstein, Professor emeritus in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology.  She has had quite the career in the Department of Modern Languages.  When she started, there were only 14 full-time faculty, and today there are twenty-one.  She has been present for the hiring of Dr. Garrison’s successor, Dr. Stefan Pugh, and for his unfortunate passing in 2013, and for the appointment of Dr. Marie Hertzler as Chair that year.  Layne has been the face of Modern Languages to students coming in for help in a myriad of circumstances, and for innovations including placement testing online, and the new Prior Learning Assessment process, initiated in August of this year. Layne will be missed, as her cheery disposition in the extension of a friendly, helping hand to all around her brightened the lives of students as well as colleagues.
