Introduction to the historical development of social work as a profession, the major fields of practice, social systems theory, the ecological perspective on social problems, and the tenets and value base of the profession. The course includes an introduction to foundation knowledge, the skills and values needed for the profession, the development of critical thinking, self-awareness, problem solving skills, and an appreciation of diversity.
