Job Search Advice 

  • Make an appointment with a career advisor. The counselor will likely ask about personal and career-related goals. You will also discuss your educational background, interests, coursework, and related aspects that affect the career decision-making process.
  • Define your transferable skills. Employers value transferable skills. After thinking about your experiences within and beyond the classroom, highlight your abilities that would positively contribute to your desired career interests.
  • Research the organization. Use online resources, informational interviewing, and your family and friends to learn about the company or organization that you would like to pursue.
  • Use discretion. If a job posting or employer seems suspicious, use your best judgment before giving them any of your personal information. Do more research on the organization and talk to a mentor about the posting. Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, chances are it is.
  • Tailor your resume and cover letter. Sending out the same generic documents to every employer is not a good strategy. Tailor your document to fit the employer’s needs. Research the position and make the case for why you are the best candidate for the specific job.
  • Cast a wide net. Just like when you apply for college or graduate school, searching and applying for jobs can be a lengthy activity. Try not to get discouraged! Talk to your career advisor, friends, family, and classmates about what you're looking for—you never know where a job lead could come from.
  • Create a LinkedIn account to connect with alumni within your desired career field. More than 80% of new hires are identified through professional networks. Joining LinkedIn and connecting with industry-related groups and the Wright State University Alumni Association is a great place to start strengthening your network.
