Program Scholarships

All Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (WGSS) majors are encouraged to complete the FAFSA and WSU Continuing Student Scholarship application, in addition to submitting applications for program scholarships. The deadline to apply for 2016-2017 program scholarships is March 25, 2016.

Outstanding Academic Achievement

This scholarship is awarded annually to a WGSS student for academic excellence in the major. It is open to all continuing WGSS majors who have at least one semester remaining before graduation, a GPA of 3.5 or higher in courses counting toward the major, and a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. The scholarship award ranges between $500 and $1,000.* To be considered for this scholarship a student must also

  • Submit a résumé that identifies your academic interests, strengths, accomplishments, and goals, as well as any related extracurricular activities or community involvement.
  • Submit a 4–7 page writing sample that has been submitted for grading in a college-level class, preferably an essay written for a WGSS class.
  • Obtain two evaluations from faculty members using the attached forms. Faculty should return completed forms directly to the WGSS program.

Gertrude Chasens Outstanding Community Leadership

This scholarship is awarded annually to a WGSS student who has demonstrated exceptional leadership skills, a commitment to feminist activism and social justice, and has financial need. It is open to all continuing WGSS majors who have at least one semester remaining before graduation and a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher. The scholarship award ranges between $500 and $1,000.* To be considered for this scholarship a student must also

  • Submit a résumé or list of activities that demonstrate your leadership skills and a commitment to feminist activism and social justice within your various communities (on campus and/or with local, regional, or national organizations).
  • Provide a copy of their 2016-17 Financial Aid Award Statement (or a copy of their FAFSA if they have not yet received this).
  • Obtain two evaluations from faculty, supervisors, and/or mentors using the attached forms. Evaluators should return completed forms directly to the WGSS program.

* Award amount is determined by funds raised during the previous year’s WGSS Annual Quilt Show Silent Auction and donations made to the WGSS Program Scholarship Fund. Scholarship recipients who fulfill the criteria may re-apply in subsequent years but preference will be given to applications from students who have not previously been awarded a WGSS program scholarship.
