Ethan Harris, current MPA graduate student, recently competed in a national academic competition.
On February 28, Ethan traveled to Indiana University to compete in the Network of Schools of Public Policy, Affairs, and Administration Student Simulation Competition. Over 300 universities were invited to compete at six different regional sites throughout the U.S. The brightest minds studying public administration from across the nation showed up to represent their universities.
The day-long event was very intense and brought together graduate students to analyze real-world problems and present their solutions to a panel of judges. Competitors were randomly assigned into groups and tasked with using a cutting edge computer simulation to produce the best locally-driven health care reform package for a fictional, but very realistic community. Students applied the skills they have learned in the classroom.
Although Ethan’s team didn’t win, he said the experience was transformative and reshaped his understanding of how policies can be developed.
