Race, Class, Gender, Sexuality Symposium--"De/Constructing Social Justice: Past, Present and Futures"

The Civil Rights Act with its Title VII that prohibited employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, national origin, and sex marks its 50th anniversary in 2014. Celebrations will laud this a great accomplishment and step forward in social justice and yet many argue that it favored white women. Domestic and agricultural workers, that is working people of color, have often been excluded from antidiscriminatory measures. Race, class, and gender intersected poorly then and still today.

Students, faculty, staff, and community members are invited to propose papers, panels, workshops, roundtables and performances as part of a day-long series of conversations about intersectional knowledge production, and the confluence of identities, oppressions, and social change solutions.

Keynote speaker Dr. Jakobi Williams, an Associate Professor of African American and African Diaspora Studies and History at Indiana University, will present "From Fred Hampton to Barack Obama: Race, Class, Gender, and the Illinois Chapter of the Black Panther Party." Please see the attached document for the full schedule.
