Master’s Project: Reducing Fear in Public Housing: How Building Relationships in the Neighborhood affect a Resident's Feeling of Safety in their Community

Karla Knox, B.A., M.A. graduated from Wright State University with her bachelor's degree in Sociology in 1994. She has worked in the public and social service field for over 22 years in the Dayton/Montgomery County area. She has been employed at Dayton Metropolitan Housing Authority dba Greater Dayton Premier Management for 13 years and previously worked at Montgomery County Job and Family Services. She holds the position of Senior Manager of Asset Management at GDPM and is responsible for the administration of the Public Housing Program in Montgomery County. Karla returned to Wright State to pursue a Masters in Applied Behavioral Sciences and a Masters in Public Administration along with the Certified Nonprofit Professional credential through the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance. Her ABS project examined how building relationships with neighbors can build the sense of community and help to reduce fear in public housing sites. The findings of this project will help develop strategies that can be used at public housing sites in Dayton, Ohio. In her spare time, Karla is active with several nonprofits in the area through her service in the Hispanic Catholic Ministry, the Latino dance troupes Grupo Raices Latinas and Que Lindo Es Panama, the Puerto Rican American and Caribbean Organization, and as a delegate to the Dayton International Festival. Professionally, she serves on the Board of the Greater Dayton Apartment Association and is currently their secretary. Karla lives in Dayton with her husband, 21-year-old daughter, 20-year-old son, and 2 dogs.
