Master’s Thesis: How Social Media Affects Racism

Ettamarie Valdez, B.A., M.A. currently works as a Behavioral Intervention Aide in the Yellow Springs School District. She has a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication with a minor in Sociology from Wright State University. Ettamarie’s Applied Behavioral Science project is entitled How Social Media Affects Racism and evaluates the influence of social media on racism, with a specific focus on Facebook. This research questions whether racism is still considered an issue in society and if/ and how social media posts heighten awareness of racism in America. A survey assessing views of racism on social media platforms in conjunction with content analysis of specific Facebook posts that reference racial issues was used to complete her research. Ettamarie future plans include pursuing a Ph.D. Furthermore, Ettamarie plans to further her research by exploring racial issues how they are impacted by various communication platforms. We congratulate and celebrate Ettamarie’s accomplishments.
