ERIC FRIEDLAND, Ph. D.

Sanders Professor of Judaic Studies, Department of Religion (1968-1998)

Dr. Friedland, profoundly deaf from birth, fell in love with the Hebrew language not long after he learned to speak (orally) his native English. After obtaining his doctorate at Brandeis University, he taught Judaic Studies, under a consortium arrangement, at four diverse academic institutions in the Dayton region: Wright State (a state-supported university), University of Dayton (a Catholic university), United Theological Seminary (a Protestant seminary) and Antioch College (a work-study liberal arts college). He is presently continuing his research in Progressive Jewish liturgies and enjoying working closely with a Muslim colleague on the Hebrew/Judeo-Arabic prayer book of the tenth-century Rabbi Sa'adiah Gaon.
