The Arabic Language Club field trip to the West Chester Mosque

The Arabic Language Club officers and members recently attended and observed the Jumma prayer on Friday, March 28, 2014. Students of Arabic also participated in the outing, and were required to observe the rules of Islamic dress by wearing modest clothing. The women were also required to cover their hair. The Ahmad Samawi Mosque, which belongs to the Islamic Society of Greater Cincinnati, hosted the Arabic Club and students and provided a tour guide. In addition to the members of the Arabic Language Club, Professor Amira Ben-Amer Orr and Professor Aicha El-Yamani were also in attendance.

The Mosque located in West Chester, Ohio was established in 1995 with the help of Ahmad Samawi, who provided much of the necessary funding and labor necessary to build the magnificent structure. The mosque itself is constructed using blocks and other elements imported from Syria and shipped to the U.S. specifically for use in the construction of this mosque. Additionally, local sources were used to create the magnificent stained glass windows used throughout the property.

Students who attended were given a tour of the mosque interior and great hall. After the tour student's ate at Laziz a local Middle Eastern restaurant serving excellent halal fare. Students were also given the opportunity to shop at the attached halal grocery for merchandise and food.

The Arabic Club believes that the event was educational and was a success and is considering hosting similar events throughout the academic year.
