Dr. Melissa Doran completed her PhD in the department of Spanish and Portuguese at The Ohio State University in May 2014. Her dissertation, "(De)Humanizing Narratives of Terrorism in Spain and Peru," examined the humanizing and dehumanizing discourses at play in the literary and filmic representation of the conflicts between the Spanish State and ETA and the Peruvian State and Sendero Luminoso. With a particular focus on the actors of these conflicts, her project emphasized that these particular discourses are employed to either justify or delegitimize the motivations and behaviors of both government actors and members of insurgent groups deemed terrorist organizations.
