2017 OFLA Conference

French professors Abadie, Halling, Daddah, Hirt, Hertzler and Chinese professor Broadstock attended the 2017 OFLA (Ohio Foreign Language Association) annual conference in Columbus, Ohio on March 30th and 31st.

Professors Abadie and Halling presented Les Enfoirés: 28 Years of Celebrities in Service:

In 1985, beloved comedian Coluche founded a charity to feed the poor, les Restaus du Coeur, but died in 1986 before he could see the full impact of his work. To honor his legacy, the musical phenomenon Les Enfoirés was created to turn profits from concerts and albums into meals for the needy. In this workshop, they focused on the theme of compassion to introduce and analyze the charity, the songs, and the musicians who sacrifice for this cause.

Professor Daddah presented La Cuisine dans le Cinéma Français:

In this session, Karine Daddah showed how she shared her love for the French language and cuisine through a unique and popular course offered every summer. Combining film and food analysis, she gave examples of films highlighting the cultural, social, and historical importance of food in every facet of French life. The session illustrated how students learn the "art of the table" and experience French "convivialité."

Professors Hirt and Hertzler presented Pas que des crêpes! Découvrir la Francophonie dans la Cuisine du Québec:

In this session, conducted in French, they explored an array of authentic foods in Quebec.  They took virtual tours of Quebec's diverse food scenes to discover their unique cultural attributes. Benjamin Hirt and Marie Hertzler shared their experiences incorporating Quebec foods into high school and university studies, and invited attendees to think beyond the baguette when teaching culture through food in the French classroom.

Professor Hertzler presented Trouver Son Équilibre:

Maintaining balance in our lives is a constant challenge. Marie Hertzler, RYT 500, led us through a yoga practice that you can easily incorporate into your day, in school or out, to reset, recenter, refuel and restore.

Professor Broadstock presented Design a Chinese Study Abroad Program with language and Service Learning:

The presentation started with a Kahoot game to survey the participants' study abroad experience.  None of the participant who were all Chinese teachers, had service learning experience, but some shared their study programs. After presenting the WSU Chinese Ambassador Program with service learning activities design, the participants were interested to add service learning to their own study abroad program.
