Outstanding College Educator Award

Angela Beumer Johnson

The English Department is pleased to announce the recipient of the spring 2014 Outstanding College Educator Award: Angela Beumer Johnson

Ohio Council of Teachers of English Language Arts Conference (OCTELA)

Congratulations!!!

Literacy has the power to change, and save, lives. I firmly believe this to be true. And one of my goals as an English teacher educator is to help future teachers find ways to make learning personally meaningful for their students.  ~ Angie Beumer Johnson

Angela’s former student Janie Marie Murphy says, “She taught me the value of using literature that my students can relate to, and she showed me how to develop creative lessons that inspire my students to become life-long readers.”

Dr. Nancy Mack, Colleague of Angie states, “Angie is the consummate professional, always taking the high road and working tirelessly behind the scenes to solve problems that students and teachers on all levels must face.”

According to colleague and English department Chair, Carol S. Loranger, Dr. Johnson’s teaching “exemplifies a focus on students and their environment. Her course materials emphasize the connection of language arts standards to current events and popular culture; they emphasize media literacy, which she models in her own teaching for best practices for integrating these to her students. Generous classroom time is given to reflection based on experience based as a means to lead students to an innate as well intellectual understanding of the pedagogical theories behind the lessons.”

Angela currently serves as a Professor of English at Wright State University, Dayton Ohio. She is a National Board Certified Teacher, co-author of the nationally-recognized NCATE (National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education) teacher evaluation program, and Co-director of the Integrated Language Arts Education graduate licensure program. Angela is a frequent presenter at both OCTELA and NCTE conferences.
