Statehouse reporter Laura Bischoff makes History

By Anitra Jordan

Wright State University’s Department of Communication and WSU’s Paul Lawrence Dunbar Library’s Special Collections & Archives, held their 6th annual Living Legends Lecture series event in Wright State’s Dunbar Library on May 29.

This year, Statehouse reporter, Laura Bischoff made history for having 106 front-page articles in 2014., which is more than any other reporter in history of the Dayton Daily News.  Following Ty Greenlees (2010), Jeff Bruce (2011), Tom Archdeacon (2012), D.L Stewart (2013), and Dale Huffman (2014), Bischoff is the first woman to become inducted into the Living Lecture series.

The event kicked off with the Department of Communication’s Chair Dr. Melissa Spirek introducing Bischoff’s editor Anthony Shoemaker. The political editor said that he’s never caught an error from Bischoff and he was proud to introduce the woman of the hour.

Bischoff highlighted how she came to be the reporter she is today. But her speech wasn’t just about how she became a reporter, she also talked about the many articles that she was fortunate enough to be able to cover.

The award winning reporter not only thanked her family whose support made the 106 articles possible, but she also thanked the politicians whose colorful shenanigans made for so many interesting stories.

One of the articles wrote was Is Juvenile Courts system fair? In this article, Bischoff questions the favoritism or justifiable reasons for some lawyers to get more cases than others.  Another story examined former Gov. Taft’s improper acceptance of gifts while servicing as an official while yet another investigated improper behavior of former Ohio Attorney General Marc Dann.

At the conclusion of Bischoff lecture, Cox Media Group Ohio’s Vice President of Content Jana Collier and Market Vice President Julia Wallace lifted the cover to expose Bischoff’s name.

The plaque is posted on the fourth floor of Wright State’s Dunbar Library within the Special Archives.
