Exhibition reception: Sunday, October 5, 3:00-5:30 p.m.
Lecture with Elena Dorfman and reception: Thursday, October 9, 5:00-7:00 p.m.
Exposure highlights over 70 photographs by world-class artists presenting a wide breadth of aesthetic, conceptual and technical approaches to the medium. This diverse selection of images showcase a comprehensive range of subjects, processes and themes relating to social and cultural issues, race and gender, as well as traditions and movements within the last 60 years of the photographic genre. In addition to exhibiting photographs from the Stein Galleries’ permanent collection, supplemental works are on loan from The Dayton Art Institute, Aileron, Sara M. and Michelle Vance Waddell of Cincinnati, and Ben Montague and Jenn Farrington of Dayton.
On Thursday, October 9, from 5:00-6:00 p.m., acclaimed photographer Elena Dorfman will be giving a free public lecture on her work. A reception will follow until 7:00 p.m. Elena Dorfman achieved much her fame through exploring the social, cultural, and sexual practices of marginalized communities. Some of her other series explored the lives of Cosplay participants and horse jockeys. She eventually branched out to capture contemporary views of ancient yet evolving landscapes, shifting the focus from people to places. It was her “Still Lovers” series, however, that placed her in the spotlight of contemporary photography.
